1928 Gibson L-5 Master Model #85755

Model: Gibson L-5 "Dot Neck," with "Master Model" label
Year: 1928
Serial Number: 85755
FON: 9418
Finish: Cremona Sunburst
Present Owner: Jack "MontereyJacques" Fields (www.djangology.net)

This guitar is a 1928 Gibson L-5 "Dot Neck" with a very rare Master Model label. Its serial number places it very early in 1928, but, per George Gruhn, it is possible that this guitar was actually started in 1927. Its 16 inch body is parallel braced. It has been oversprayed and the tuners have been replaced, everything else appears original. The tailpiece has a 1910 patent stamp on it. It has one repaired top crack on the treble side of the lower bout, near the binding, that does not appear to go all the way through. The guitar has a rounded contour C-profile neck, rather than V-shaped neck, which is consistent with the date of this instrument. It has the original "red stripe" case, with red velvet interior, which is scuffed, but structurally sound and still very serviceable. The accessory box inside the case has a red velvet diamond.

This guitar sounds HUGE. It is easily as loud as my Selmer-syle D-Hole Favino. It has a well rounded, warm sound, yet with very high sweet trebles. Perhaps a little more cut, tonally, that my X-braced 17 inch L-5. The neck is a little wider than modern L-5's, but the C-profile neck makes it very playable. It plays very balanced. With 3mm action at the 3rd fret, it plays like a Telecaster. The short scale and the 16 inch body make it a very comfortable guitar for long gigs and jams. This is a very versatile guitar, capable of sounding "authentic" for swing, hot jazz, country and folk. It even has a very convincing Gypsy "la pompe" sound.

This guitar was previously owned by Tony Marcus (Cheap Suit Serenader's & Cat's & Jammers), Andy Summers (The Police), and Norman "The Harris Machine" Harris.

JP Favino #1077

Model: 12 Fret D-Hole
Serial Number: 1077
Year: 1995
Finish: Natural
Present Owner: Jack "MontereyJacques" Fields (www.djangology.net)

This guitar is a long scale (670 mm) 12 Fret D-hole Selmer-style guitar, made by the legendary Jean-Pierre Favino in 1995. It features book a matched european alpine spruce top, and very highly figured laminated mahogany sides and back and a mahogany neck. It is extremely light weight and exceptionally loud. There is small mahogany patch in the back near the neck heel, about the size of a postage stamp, that is perfectly matched to the grain, that according to its previous owner, was done by JP Favino before it ever left the shop. There is also one very small dent/crack in the top that is located between braces and is very stable.

1998 Dupont MC-50 "Sweet & Lowdown"

Model: MC-50 "Sweet & Lowdown"
Year: 1998
Serial Number: Juin 1998
Location: California
Owner: Jack "MontereyJacques" Fields

Notes: This 1998 Dupont MC-50 12 Fret D-Hole was built for Woody Allen's film, "Sweet & Lowdown." It has a Spruce top, laminated Indian Rosewood/Mahogany sides and back, Walnut neck and Rosewood binding. It is finished with a custom color, "Cognac Amber." After filming, The satin finish it had in the film was polished by one of its previous owners, Paul Mehling. The older style square Dupont label was swapped for a Selmer style label. In addition to its movie credits, this guitar has been used on several recordings by The Hot Club of San Francisco. It is equipped with a McIntyre pickup. It has been previously owned by Paul Mehling and Dave Ricketts, and is nicknamed, "Chocolate Boy," or "Chocolate Bar"

Sonically, this Dupont is one of the best I have ever heard or played. It is extremely loud and sonorous, with enough treble to cut through a band that horns and drums. It plays easily and quickly.
